3rd Annual Novice Local/Rep Austin Holley Memorial Fall Shoot-out
This year will mark the 3rd Annual Austin Holley Fall Shoot Out. The tournament will run from October 25-27 and will feature some of the best novice talent in the area. There will be six local league teams and six Representative level teams all competing to the best of their ability.
Austin passed away on July 18, 2010 of a brain aneurysm. For those who knew this vibrant, excited and sporty nine year old, it does not seem possible so much time has passed. Yet, not a day goes by where his friends, coaches, relatives, family and school community members don’t think about him. Austin was a member of the Novice Representative hockey team, played Wiarton minor baseball and loved anything to do with sports. He was a special boy who made the people around him smile. Lori (mom), Steve (dad) and sister (Taylor) all continue to remember him every day.
After Austin’s passing, some of his coaches got together and wanted to remember Austin in some way. It started with a sweater case, built by Jon Phillips of JP construction, to hold Austin’s #12 novice sweater. The case is located in the Wiarton Community Centre lobby and also contains a special picture of Austin, a poem written by Coach Kevin Gilbert and a stone carved by Bob Bell. Many people miss Austin. The memorial case will remain in the lobby of the arena as a constant reminder of the joy sport brought to Austin. It also serves as a reminder of how fortunate we all have been to know Austin.
Not long after the same group of parents got together and started the annual Austin Holley Novice Fall Shoot Out that has a stated mission, “To provide a safe, fun experience for each player/family and raise funds for the Austin Holley trust to support children in our communities who, as determined by minor hockey, need assistance.”
